The Bay Lights: 25,000 LEDs on the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge

Leo Villareal turned the western span's suspension cables into a 1.8-mile, algorithm-driven light sculpture — one of the largest LED artworks in the world.

Project summary

The Bay Lights is a monumental light sculpture installed on the vertical suspender cables of the Bay Bridge's western span. Conceived by artist Leo Villareal and produced by the non-profit Illuminate, it switched on in March 2013 to mark the bridge's 75th anniversary.

Roughly 25,000 white LED nodes, each individually addressable, are spaced along the cables. Custom software generates ever-changing patterns — inspired by rain, wind, water and the movement of the bay — that never repeat in exactly the same way.

Originally planned as a two-year temporary installation, the work proved so popular that it was made permanent. The original hardware, which struggled in the corrosive marine environment, was replaced with a more robust system in 2016, and the work has since been expanded so it can be seen from more of the bay.

Key team

Leo Villareal

Artist

Born in 1967 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Villareal studied sculpture at Yale and earned a master's degree from NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program. He works with LEDs and custom-written code to create large-scale light works, including Multiverse at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and Illuminated River, a scheme lighting bridges across the Thames in London.

Ben Davis

Founder, Illuminate

A San Francisco-based communications strategist, Davis conceived the idea of lighting the Bay Bridge and founded Illuminate to raise private funding and manage the permitting, engineering and public campaign behind the project.

Caltrans & Bay Area Toll Authority

Infrastructure partners

As owners and operators of the bridge, the agencies set strict requirements for safety, maintenance access and driver distraction — the lights are visible from the shore, not from the roadway deck.

The process

  1. 01

Designing for drivers and the shoreline

Light points were placed on the vertical suspender cables and aimed outward so the sculpture reads from the Embarcadero and the bay while remaining invisible to drivers on the deck — a key condition of approval.

  2. 02

    Installing on a live bridge

Electricians installed the LED strings at night over several months, clipping fixtures to cables up to roughly 500 feet above the water while traffic continued to flow below.

  3. 03

    Writing the light

Villareal composes with custom software rather than pre-recorded sequences. Rules and algorithms drive brightness across the 25,000 nodes, producing organic motion at a scale of 1.8 miles that works as a single canvas.

  4. 04

    Rebuilding for permanence

Salt air, wind and vibration caused failures in the original system. When the work became permanent, the installation was rebuilt in 2016 with more durable fixtures and mounting, a reminder that exterior specification must account for the full environmental envelope.

Lessons for specifiers

  • → Marine and infrastructure environments demand the highest ingress and corrosion ratings.
  • → Generative control turns a fixed array into an endlessly variable work.
  • → Glare and driver distraction can define the entire optical strategy.
  • → Plan for maintenance access before the first fixture goes up.
